NDLEA arrests 66 suspects, seizes 1,862kg narcotics in Nasarawa

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Nasarawa State command, has said it had arrested 66 suspected drug barons and seized about 1,862kg of narcotics in the state.

Parading the suspects at the state’s command in Lafia, Nasarawa commander of the NDLEA, Mr. Sumaila Ethan, said the suspects were apprehended between January and June 2016.

He added that out of the 66 drug suspects, 12 convictions were secured at the Federal High Court, Lafia while 32 drug addicts were counselled and rehabilitated.

Ethan also announced that the command had also arrested one Mr. Augustine Christopher, a major drug baron alongside members of his gangs who attacked his men recently in Wamba Local Government Area of the state.

“Our statistics show an increase in the number of arrest/seizures above that of last year. It shows that more people are getting involved in the consumption and trafficking of these substances in Nasarawa State,” he added.

While lamenting the increasing number of people involved in drug consumption and trafficking in Nasarawa, Ethan said the command arrested three barons in Keffi with about one tonne of drugs and seized a big truck used in conveying the substances.

The NDLEA boss further said the command seized about 34 bags of cannabis sativa weighing about 360kg in Wamba, the headquarters of Wamba LGA of the state.

He noted that apart from counselling drug users as a means of reducing the demand for drugs, the command had established ‘drug free’ clubs in some secondary schools within the state and the Federal University Lafia, adding that efforts have been stepped up to also establish drug free clubs in Nasarawa State Polytechnic and College of Agriculture, Lafia.
