Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad of the Lagos State Police Command have rescued a suspected car thief, Benjamin Michael, 27, from a mob that tried to lynch him for attempting to steal a car.
Michael was allegedly caught while attempting to remove a Mercedes Benz A-Class with number plate, UB 202 AAA, from a car park in Ikeja.
The suspect, who hails from Ughelli in Delta State, was rescued by the RRS men to prevent the angry mob from carrying out jungle justice on him.
The suspect, who had sustained some injuries on his head before the arrival of RRS operatives, was taken to a hospital for medical attention by the police.
Later, at the RRS office in Alausa, Ikeja, Michael said his plan was to steal the vehicle and take it out of Lagos to sell.
He said, “The car was not locked, which gave me free entry into it. I entered the car quietly with the aim of taking it away.
“But I did not know that some people saw me entering the vehicle. Suddenly, I saw a group of men coming towards me; the owner of the car was with them.
“When they got to the car, they dragged me out and started beating me. If not for the timely intervention of the RRS officers, they would have killed me.”
The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Dolapo Badmos, said, “The suspect will be charged to court upon completion of our investigations. Car owners must ensure that their vehicles are properly locked to prevent car thieves from taking undue advantage of such negligence.”
