AN 89- year-old widow, Mrs. Bessie Onwuazor, of Adazi-Ani, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State on Thursday appealed to concerned Nigerians to help her recover possession of her husband’s house in Abakiliki, Ebonyi State.
She alleged that her family was evicted from the property by a prominent politician from Ebonyi State (names withheld) who had sold the property.
Onwuazor, who took the protest to Onitsha in company of 40 human rights groups, addressed newsmen on the issue.
The Octogenarian appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari and the Inspector General of Police to help her recover her late husband’s house.
She also appealed to the former Head of State; Dr. Yakubu Gowon, who she said was her classmate in Abakaliki, to also intervene in the matter.
Onwuazor said, “I was born in 1927, got married in 1948 to my late husband at the age of 21years.
“I lived in Abakaliki, the present Ebonyi State capital with my husband in the house containing 36 rooms until he died in 1993.”
She alleged that her life and those of her two male children, Chijioke and Mmaduaburuchukwu, were under threat.
According to her, “We’ve been intimidated out of Abakaliki and our lives are under threat by those who evicted us and sold our house.
“I have reported the case to International Federation of Women Lawyers, Abakaliki Branch, but immediately the names of those involved in the illegal and illicit acquisition of our property were mentioned, they withdrew from the matter.”
Onwuazor said after the death of her husband, she relocated to her town, Adazi-Ani, and handed over the Abakiliki property to somebody.
She recalled that it was under that arrangement that everything went awry.
“One day, a man called me, a well-known politician in Ebonyi State, to inform me that we were no more the owners of the property located on Afikpo Street in Abakaliki.
“That was how the building was sold without my consent and those of my six children,” the octogenarian stated.
Speaking, the spokesperson of the human rights groups, Mr. Peter Onyegiri, urged the Federal Government to cause the Inspector General of Police to investigate the matter.
