Court grants man N200,000 bail for stealing carpet


An Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court on Thursday granted N200,000 bail to a 32-year-old man, Adeyemo Niyi, for allegedly stealing carpet and rug.

Niyi, of no fixed address, is facing one count charge of stealing.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Augustine Ozimini, told the court that the offence was committed on May 31 at about 12:00 p.m. at Jos Carpet Company, Abiola Way, Abeokuta.

Ozimini said the accused person stole some meters of tufted carpet worth N1.3 million and 12 piece of centre rug worth N107,975, all valued at N1,478,494 million, property of Mr Obafemi Saliu.

The prosecutor said Niyi was the manager of Abeokuta branch of the company.

He said the accused sold the items and refused to remit the proceeds to the company’s account.

Ozimini said the offence contravened section 383 and 390 (6) of the Criminal Laws of Ogun 2006.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Mr Idowu Olayinka, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum
