Warehouse fence kills Lagos casual worker

A casual worker, identified only as Deji, has lost his life while working on the fence of a warehouse belonging to MDS Logistics on Vory Close, Acme Road, Agidingbi, Ikeja area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Deji and his friend, whose name had yet to be identified, were asked to pull down the fence of the warehouse on Thursday around 10am.

It was learnt that the duo, who was allegedly inexperienced, started breaking the fence of the warehouse from the bottom.

The wall was said to have collapsed on the two workers, killing Deji.

Our correspondent gathered that the management of the company called the officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit and policemen from the Alausa division, who came to remove the corpse and deposit it in a morgue.

When our correspondent visited the area on Friday, it was gathered that the deceased was not a worker of the company and had only followed his friend to make some money.

A source said there were about eight warehouses in the compound, adding that the duo was working on one of them which needed renovation.

He said, “The warehouses are lent out to different firms, including telecommunication companies.

“The warehouse, where this incident happened, has not been occupied yet. It’s undergoing renovation because the company wanted to expand the doorway. The job was given to a contractor who then hired those boys.

“The boy that died followed his friend to the place to make some money. They were asked to break down the fence. But the boys were inexperienced and they started hitting the fence from the bottom.

“One of them stood on the fence and was also hitting it with a hammer and that was when the fence caved in. The man on the fence was able to quickly run and escape, but the second boy, who was by the fence, was trapped and mangled to death.”

A resident told PUNCH Metro that the second worker raised the alarm and people rushed there, only to discover that Deji was dead.

He explained that a forklift was used to remove the debris, while SEHMU and the police were called in.

He said, “The place where the incident happened was barricaded and other casual workers in the compound were not allowed to go there. People on the street did not even know about it until SEHMU brought an ambulance to take the corpse. It was a sad day for the company.”

Officials and workers of the company declined comment, while efforts to speak with the management proved abortive.

An official, who did not identify himself, said, “The Managing Director came on Friday and workers were instructed to keep mum about the incident. We all are not happy it happened. Although I have the MD’s contact, I am sorry I cannot release it to you.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, however, confirmed the death, saying the victim was identified as a bricklayer.

She said, “The report we have was that the fence of the company fell on a bricklayer while he was working on it. The victim died at the spot and his corpse was removed and deposited at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital’s morgue while investigation is ongoing.”
