Two jailed for stealing Nokia battery, phones, others


AN Oredo Magistrates’ Court in Benin, Edo State, has sentenced a 19-year old man, Happy Okotie, to six years’ imprisonment for stealing.

Okotie was sentenced along with a 25-year-old man, Kingsley Ebose, who was also jailed for six years without an option of fine.

They were convicted by a magistrate, Mrs. RacheaI Ogbevoen, who found them guilty on two counts of burglary.


The offence was said to have been committed on August 25, 2016, in New Benin, in the Oredo Local Government Area of the state.

The police prosecutor, Mr. Patrick Agbonifo, had told the court that the convicts conspired to commit felony on the day.

Agbonifo explained that they broke into a store belonging to one Tessy Okpebiye at night and stole some items.

He had listed the stolen items to include one Nokia battery, two Samsung Galaxy phones, one laptop and a cash sum of N17,000.

Agbonifo said that the stolen items were worth N235,000.

According to the prosecutor, the offence contravened sections 516 and 411 of the Criminal Code, Cap , Vol. II, Law of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria, 1976, as applicable in Edo State.
