A house wife on Tuesday committed suicide in her apartment at Ilisan-Remo, Ikenne Local Council of Ogun State.Mrs. Omolola Atejioye, 35, was found dangling from the ceiling at 5:30p.m. by her husband, Ayodele Atejioye, a member of staff of Babcock University, Ilisan Remo, when he returned from work to their apartment along Ago Iwoye Road.
The husband was said to have found his late wife’s body dangling in the room, with a rope tied to the ceiling, when he forced the door to their apartment opened. The deceased, who until her death was a petty trader, did not leave behind any suicide note.
Omolola’s husband was said to have reported the incident to policemen in Ilisan, who rushed to the scene and took her remains to the mortuary of the Babcock varsity. The state acting Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident. He said Omolola’s husband reported his discovery at home to the police.
Oyeyemi, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said a post mortem would be carried out on the body to determine the cause of her death. The deceased left behind a three-year-old boy. Some of her neighbours were particularly surprised that Omolola could take her own life, because they claimed she was not a difficult person.
One of her neighbours, who pleaded anonymity, said: “The woman was an easy-going person, and we were surprised when we heard that she hanged herself.”Another neigbour said the deceased has been facing health challenge, which was giving her a lot of concern. Others said she had allegedly incurred some debts, which she was struggling to pay back, without success.
When contacted, Omolola’s husband, however, said the wife did not incur any debt. He said she had some challenges, which he failed to disclose, but noted that she was already getting out of it.
“My wife did not incur any debt. We were both working at Babcock before she was laid off during the last downsizing by the varsity management.“So, we opened a shop in town where she sold animal feeds, and the business thrived. But when she got pregnant, she took ill. Even after she gave birth, the sickness assumed a frightening dimension.
“So I took her to Babcock University Teaching Hospital, but her condition did not improve. I informed her mother about it, who later took her to Iloro-Ekiti.“She was under medical attention at Iloro-Ekiti for about six months, and her condition improved greatly. So I had to go and bring her back to Ilisan. But before she returned, the sales girl I got for her to handle the shop in her absence made away with over N200,000 from the sales of the feeds.
“I just got an additional N300,000 loan from the cooperative to boost the business, and was even planning to plough more money into it.“Even that fateful day, she went to the bank in the morning to deposit some money from the previous day’s sales. So, I don’t really know the reason for this act.”
