Woman, 60, arraigned for alleged N600,000 fraud

A 60-year-old woman identified as Itohan Ighavogbe-Akoda has been arraigned before an Egor Magistrate’s Court in Benin, Edo State, for allegedly obtaining the sum of N600,000 under false pretence.

The police prosecutor, Mrs. Violet Soyemi, said the offence was committed in 2012 at Edemakhitan Street, off Upper Ekenwa Road in Benin.

Soyemi told the court that the accused person allegedly obtained the said amount with the intent to defraud one Emily Osazuwa-Nosa under the pretence to sell a parcel of land measuring 50ft x 100ft.

The police prosecutor explained that sometime in June 2016, along a road, off Leaders College Road, Evbuotubu, the accused person allegedly stole one trip of granite valued at N45,000; 1,500 moulded blocks valued N195,000 and one trip of sand valued at N15,000 belonging to Osazuwa-Nosa.

Soyemi said the accused person allegedly concealed the land documents she ought to have released to Osazuwa-Nosa.

The accused person was also said to have conducted herself in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by allegedly retaining the land title documents and intentionally refusing to release same to the victim.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Sections 419, 390 (9), 393 and 249(d), of the Criminal Code Cap 48 Vol. II, Laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria, 1976, as applicable to Edo.

But the accused person pleaded not guilty to the five counts.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Esther Aimofumhe, however, granted her bail in the sum of N200,000 and a surety in like sum, who should be a civil servant resident in Benin.

The case was adjourned till October 13, 2016.
