Outrage as stepmom tortures girl to death with knife in Kaduna

girl tortured with knife

The death of a seven-year-old girl Zainab Ibrahim, who was allegedly mutilated and tortured by her step-mother in Rigasa area of Kaduna State has roused anger and call for urgent retribution in the state.

The pictures of Zainab’s body circulated on the social media on Wednesday, showing every part of the girl’s body covered in gory looking injuries said to have been caused by a knife the suspect allegedly used to slice the girl’s body.

When our correspondent contacted the Kaduna State Police Command, the suspect was identified as Rabe Ibrahim.

She was said to have taken the girl to the hospital for treatment, but the child succumbed to her injuries soon after.

Saturday PUNCH learnt that when the doctor who attended to the girl, asked her step-mother what caused the extensive injuries, he was told that she had seizures and got the injuries in the process.

But the unconvinced doctor was said to have called the police when he realised that the injuries were not consistent with the story he was told.

All attempts to save Zainab were abortive as the police said the injuries had damaged her buttocks and other parts of her body.

The step-mother was immediately arrested and detained at the Department of Criminal Investigation, Kaduna.

The spokesperson for the Kaduna State Police Command, Mr. Aliyu Usman, told our correspondent that Zainab died on August 25, 2016.

He assured the family of the victim and residents of the state that the suspect would be duly prosecuted.

Usman added that Rabe had been arraigned before a Rigasa Chief Magistrate’s Court, Kaduna.

Zainab’s death is coming few days after two siblings – two year-old Abdulrahman Abubakar and four year-old girl, Maryam Abubakar – were rushed to the hospital after being brutalised by their step-mother in Igabi Local Government Area of the state.

The suspect allegedly broke Abdulrahman’s left hand and right leg while inflicting a severe injury on the head of Maryam.

On Monday, when officials of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps came for the step-mother, Hasiya, she fled.

According to the children’s mother, Halima, she had separated from her husband after three years of marriage but he took the children away from her.
