Suspected robbers arrested after auto accident

Two suspected robbers – Sunday Isiaka and Tunde Segun – have been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command on Victoria Island area.

PUNCH Metro gathered that 22-year-old Isiaka, an okada rider, and Segun, 32, who used the former’s motorcycle for robbery, allegedly attacked a lady, identified only as Okoro, at about 8.30pm, at the Eko Hotel bus stop.

It was learnt that the suspects had waylaid the woman last Tuesday, snatched her handbag and fled on the motorcycle.

Nemesis caught up with the robbers a few minutes later when the motorcycle had a collision with a commercial bus.

The suspects reportedly fell down from the motocycle, leading to their arrest.

A police source said the suspects specialised in using motorcycles to rob people, adding that they were arrested after robbing Okoro.

He added that Okoro’s phone, a Samsung Galaxy worth N25,000, was recovered from the suspects.

Speaking with PUNCH Metro, Segun, who also claimed to be a commercial bus driver plying Ajah to CMS route, said the robbery of the woman was their third operation.

He said, “Isiaka and I worked together. After we steal phones, we sell and share the proceeds. On Tuesday, we were on the motorcycle as usual and when we got to the bus stop, we saw the lady by the roadside.

“We snatched her phone and handbag and rode away. But we were unlucky because the motorcycle hit a bus. We fell down and were arrested. It was our third operation.”

Isiaka, who rode the motorcycle, however, denied knowing Segun, adding that he only brought him to the area on his motorcycle.

He said, “I work as a painter in Kwara State.

“I came to Lagos about 10years ago and I started working as a commercial motorcyclist in the Ajah area. I did not know Segun before that day. I was going home after the day’s work when he waved at me to take him to a place.

“I did not know that he was going there to steal.

“We were on the motorcycle on that day when he robbed the woman.

“He asked me to ride away quickly, but I hit a commercial bus and we were arrested by the police.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, said the suspects would be charged to court at the end of investigation.
