A Magistrate Court sitting in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, has sentenced 20-year-old Abeeb Wasiu to three months’ imprisonment for stealing a motorcycle from the Osun State Police Command headquarters in Osogbo.
The convict was, however, given the option to pay a fine of N10,000.
A police prosecutor, Mr. Mereti Wilson, had told the court when the suspect was arraigned that Wasiu stole a motorcycle, marked, SGB 767 QB, belonging to one Wodi Michael from the police headquarters on August 23, 2016, at about 11am.
The prosecutor told the court that the offence contravened Section 303 and was punishable under Section 390 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, volume II, Law of Osun State, Nigeria.
The charge read, “That you, Abeeb Wasiu, on August 23, 2016, at about 11am, at the Osun State Police Command Headquarters, Osogbo, in the Osogbo Magisterial District, did steal one Boxer Bajaj motorcycle, with number plate, SGB 767QB; chassis no, MD 218AZ6DWM64355; and engine no DUZYWDM93608, property of one Wodi Michael, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 383 (1) and punishable under Section 390 ( 10A) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Vol. 11, Law of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.”
Waisu, who had no counsel, pleaded guilty to the offence and begged for clemency.
The magistrate, Mrs. A. Bashiru, sentenced him to three months’ imprisonment or a fine of N10,000.
