The Association of Water Producers, Lagos State chapter, has called on the state government to stop illegal water producers in the state and address unwholesome water circulation to residents.
The association stated this on Wednesday at a press briefing organised by the Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission in Alausa, Ikeja.
The Chairman of the Alimosho branch of the group, Mr. Yisa Adeoye, spoke on behalf of the water producers, promising that members would comply with the provisions of the Lagos State Groundwater Quality Control Regulations and the Lagos State Drinking Water Quality Standard as stipulated by the Lagos State Water Sector Law (LSWSL), 2004.
He said the government must also work to make the water market easy for the producers by enforcing the law.
He said, “Members of the association are law abiding and will give their maximum cooperation to the provisions of the law.
“We hope that the government in turn will make sure that the introduction of the law curbs the influx of illegal water producers in the state, as well as address the issue of unwholesome water circulation to Lagosians.
“We will sensitise our members so that they will carry out their activities lawfully and in line with the dictates of the law.”
The Executive Secretary of the state commission, Ahmed Abdullahi, said the government started discussions with the association of water producers in the state about seven months ago to make sure that the law guiding the water sector worked.
“It means that with the agreement we have reached with the water producers today (Wednesday), the full implementation of the law begins tomorrow (Thursday) and the full weight of the law will come on any defaulter,” Abdullahi added.
He said the government had commenced the process of registering water producers in the state with the aim of having a database for all legal water extractors and producers.
He said, “The government and the water producers will work to ensure that Lagosians have access to only quality and clean water. The government will also put in place a coordinated tariff for all water producers to maintain a uniformed price.”
