Okada rider, 42, docked for alleged assault

Akaniyere James is to cool his heels in Kirikiri prison, pending the perfection of his bail conditions after he pleaded innocent to causing grievous harm to another person.

The 42- year- old commercial motorcyclist (okada rider) was granted bail on Friday by an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos on a three- count charge bothering on assault and breach of peace.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Joseph Ajebe told the court that the accused committed the offence on October 2 at Ogba bus stop, Lagos.

He said that the complainant, Adewale Abiona, reported that the accused, and others now at large, beat him to a pulp while he was trying to caution them not to argue with traffic officials.

The complainant, the prosecutor said, saw traffic personnel from Area ‘G’ command, with a motorcyclist (the accused), who was creating a scene and arguing with the police officers.

“Abiona went to the accused to caution him to desist from such an act, but the Okada rider pounced on him and beat him to a pulp leaving him with injuries,” Ajebe said.

He further alleged that the accused tore the complainant’s shirt and made away with his N3,500.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravene sections 166, 171 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2011.

The Chief Magistrate Alexander Komolafe, granted the accused bail in the sum N100,000, with two sureties, who must show evidence of being gainful employment.

The case was adjourned.
