Four armed robbers, who operated on two motorcycles, attacked a filling station in the Isolo area of Lagos State on Tuesday, during which two of them were shot dead by the police.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the robbers, who had two Barreta pistols and 19 rounds of ammunition, had attacked Y.T.K filling station at Oke Afa bus stop around 11am and carted away an undisclosed amount of money.
Our correspondent learnt that there was panic in the area, as the robbers shot repeatedly, forcing many shop owners and pedestrians to scamper to safety.
Policemen from the Isolo division were said to have mobilised to the area, and engaged the robbers in a shootout.
Two robbery suspects were reportedly shot dead, while two others escaped on a motorcycle.
A bus passenger, who claimed to be an eyewitness and gave his name only as Saheed, said the robbers shot one of the customers at the filling station.
He said, “It was around 11am. The robbers invaded the filling station and shot at a man buying fuel. They snatched some money from other buyers and ran away on motorcycles.
“The man that was shot was assisted by people and rushed to a hospital.”
Our correspondent learnt that a Boxer motorcycle, with number plate, FKJ718QH, used by the robbers, was recovered by the police.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the incident, adding that the police were on the trail of the fleeing suspects.
She said, “Upon receipt of the information, the Isolo Divisional Police Officer and his men went after the robbers, and caught up with them by LIMCA way, Isolo. The robbers, on sighting the police team, opened fire, and the operatives responded.
“Two of the robbers fell in the gun duel, while two others fled from the scene. Two Barreta pistols and 19 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the robbers. The police also picked up a sum of N250,000.
“Effort is on to apprehend the fleeing suspects. The command remains resolute in ridding the state of criminal elements.”
