Nineteen-year-old Niyi Akanni on Thursday appeared in an Apapa Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stabbing a man in the neck after an argument between them.


Akanni, who resides at Amukoko area of Apapa, Lagos, pleaded not guilty to a charge of assault.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Olusegun Kokoye, told the court that the accused committed the offence on March 19, at Oja Market, Amukoko, Apapa, Lagos.

He said that the accused beat up one Femi Otunba, stabbed him with a knife in the neck and ear, and tried to flee.


Kokoye said that the assault was as a result of an argument which ensued between the accused and the complainant.

He said efforts by passers-by to settle the dispute proved abortive.

The prosecutor said Akanni was apprehended by some pedestrians as he tried to escape after stabbing the complainant, and taken to the police station.

He said that the complainant, on the other hand, was rushed to the hospital.

Kokoye said that the offence contravened Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 173 prescribes a three-year jail term for an offender found guilty of assault occasioning harm.


The magistrate, Mr M.A Etti, granted the accused N200,000 bail, with two sureties in like sum.

Etti said the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
