A 25-year-old herbalist, Rabiu Sani, has landed in prison over the sudden death of his apprentice/salesboy, Tijani Dabo.

Sani is facing a charge of culpable homicide by negligence, an offence, the police said, was contrary to Section 222(7) of the Penal Code.

The uncle of the deceased, Alhaji Musa Mahadiim of kofar Yandaka Quarters, Katsina, had reported to the police that sometime last month, Sani, who is his neighbor, took Dabo to Hadeija, Jigawa State where he was selling herbal medicine for snakebite.

Mahadiim further told the police that on July 22, 2017, Sani telephoned him to tell him that Dabo had died of stomach ache without any medical certificate to show the cause of death.

The First Information Report filed by the police before a Katsina State Magistrates’ Court where Sani was arraigned on Thursday, said the deceased’s family believed that the accused was responsible for Dabo’s death.

“Based on this, they suspected him (Sani) to be responsible for the death of their son, Tijani Dabo,’ ’the report added.

The prosecutor, Sani Ado, told the court that investigation into the incident was in progress and requested the court to adjourn the case.

The presiding magistrate, Hajiya Fadile Dikko, adjourned the case till September 23 for mention and directed that Sani should be remanded in the prison custody.

“This court will not ask whether the allegation against you is true or false as the offence of culpable homicide is only triable by the high court.

“After police investigation, a copy of your case file will be taken to the Ministry of Justice for legal advice.

“If a prima facie case is established against you, then you will be tried at the high court. But if not, you will be discharged pursuant to Section 130 of Criminal Procedure Code,” the magistrate said.
