A 38-year-old man, Paul Adebola, who allegedly collected N330,000 from a man on the pretext of obtaining Canadian visa for him, was on Thursday brought before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
Adebola is facing a two-count of obtaining money under false pretences and stealing.
The accused committed the offences sometime in November 2014 at 11.00.a.m. at Orile-Iganmu on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, the prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court.
According to her, the accused obtained N330,000 from the complainant, Mr. Chidi Mgbaramukom, on the pretext of procuring a Canadian visa for him.
The offences contravened sections 287 (1) and 314 (a) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 314 (a) provides 15-year imprisonment for obtaining money under false pretences.
The accused pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the charge.
Magistrate Aro Lambo granted him bail in the sum of N100,000, with one surety in like sum.
Lambo said the surety must be a property owner in Lagos State with an evidence of tax payment.
