A 47-year-old suspected vandal, Francis Johnson, has been remanded in the Sagamu Prisons by a Magistrate’s Court sitting at Ikenne, Ogun State, over alleged theft of transformer oil belonging to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company.

The suspect, who was arraigned on Friday, lived along Iperu Road, Ode Remo, Ogun State.

He was remanded by Magistrate Victoria Williams pending the continuation of his trial on October 6, 2017.

Johnson, who hailed from Akwa Ibom State, allegedly committed the offence on August 27, 2017, at about 3am at Ogere Remo.

A resident, Adewale Adekoya, who lived beside the transformer, told the court that he noticed the suspicious movement of a car around the transformer at about 3am on that day.

Adekoya alleged further that the suspect later came down from the car, changed his clothes and briefly looked around to check for prying eyes from the neighborhood before climbing into the enclosure which housed the transformer.

He said, “It was at this juncture that I alerted the people in the neighbourhood. But the suspect took to his heels and left behind the vehicle, with 16 empty gallons, hose pipes, and other personal effects.”

He noted that the suspect was apprehended the next day when he came back to tow the vehicle he had abandoned, claiming that the vehicle had developed a fault the previous night.

Residents, who identified Johnson, handed him over to the police.
