The Ogun State Area Command, Nigeria Customs Service, says it has intercepted and seized a truck loaded with 3,000 cartons of imported poultry products.
The Controller of the command, Sani Madugu, said the truck belonged to a cement manufacturing company, while the seized products had an estimated duty payable value of N67.5m.
He stated this on Monday at the command’s headquarters in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
He said the command also impounded two Sport Utility Vehicles and seized 17 kilogrammes of cannabis allegedly smuggled into the country from the Republic of Benin.
Madugu said, “The truck laden with the smuggled poultry products was intercepted around 3.45am on Saturday at the Sagamu Interchange end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.”
He said the heat turned on the smugglers by customs men had forced the smugglers to change tactics by making use of vehicles belonging to corporate organisations and companies to smuggle goods.
“The driver of the truck, on sighting our men, ran away, but the driver’s partner was arrested,” Madugu said.
He later handed over the seized cannabis to the Public Relations Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Ogun State Command, Mr. Abdulahi Sardauna.
