A middle-aged housewife, Abosede Olugbenga, has pleaded with an Igando Customary Court in Lagos State to end her six-year-old marriage over allegations of battery and threat to life by her husband.
She told the court that her husband, Samuel was fond of threatening to kill her.
“I don’t want to wait till he carries out the act. He keeps saying it all the time and I am afraid that one day, he will go ahead and kill me as he had always said.
“My husband is hot tempered and he is not ready to listen to the counsel of his family or me.
“We have been married for six years and it has been hell on earth. He would not allow me to work or engage in any type of business because he is a very jealous person.
“He’s always accusing me of adultery. The last time he beat me, I lost two teeth. He said the next time he catches me with another man, he would pour acid on me and even set me ablaze.
“I fear for my life and those of my children. He has horrible mood swings and sometimes after he has beaten me, he would come back begging and we would have s3x and be at peace for a few days.
“I still love him but I can’t continue to live like this. I have a National Diploma Certificate and I wish to work with it and even further my education.
“I want the court to dissolve this marriage and grant me custody of my two children aged four and two because they are still young,” she said.
The respondent, Samuel, however, denied the allegations adding that he had never threatened his wife.
“It is true we argue but I have never threatened to pour acid on her or set her ablaze. I have great respect for women and I have never raised my hand on any woman, not to mention my wife.
“My wife is stubborn and always wanted to have her way. She got a teaching job at Agege and I called her attention to the distance from our home.
“She insisted on taking the job even though the pay is low. The end result was that she lost a four-month old pregnancy. She went about telling her family members and mine that I was the one who assaulted her which resulted in the loss of her pregnancy.
“I don’t want this marriage to end. I am ready to make amendment, “he said.
The court president, Adegboyega Omilola asked each of the parties to bring two members of their families for possible settlement while the case was adjourned till November 15 for report of settlement.
