A 52-year-old resident of Oremeji Street in the Ajangbadi area of Lagos, Olaide Abass, has allegedly taken her own life after battling with an undisclosed ailment without finding a cure.
The woman, who lived in a one-room apartment with her son, identified only as Rasheed, reportedly slit her throat with a knife last Sunday when the young man was not around.
Saturday PUNCH learnt that the son returned home around 5:00pm that fateful day and met his mother in a pool of blood.
He was said to have raised the alarm while the incident was reported at the Ajangbadi Police Station.
However, a resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the nature of the alleged suicide raised some suspicion, adding that the woman had been buried according to Islamic rites.
He said, “The woman had been ill for some time now, but I didn’t know the nature of her sickness. Her son tried his best to find a cure but all his efforts proved abortive.
“It was when I came back from an event that Sunday that I learnt she had killed herself. Inasmuch as I believe frustration can make one to commit suicide, it sounds incredible to me that the woman slit her throat herself. The police should do more investigation on the matter.”
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Chike Oti, a superintendent of police said policemen from the division visited the scene and recovered the knife, which the woman allegedly used to commit the suicide.
He said investigation into the matter was ongoing by the police.
