The police in Lagos have arrested a 73-year-old man, Fola Olowoigbo, for allegedly raping a 14-year-old and impregnating her.

The suspect was said to be a neighbour of the victim’s mother who lived on Fella Ahmed Street, Agric, Ikorodu, Lagos State.

The police said the septuagenarian took advantage of the girl on the pretext of sending her on errands.

The bubble reportedly burst when the victim’s mother observed that she was pregnant and after pestering her, she said Olowoigbo was responsible for the pregnancy.

The case was reported to the police and the suspect was arrested.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chike Oti, in a statement on Wednesday said the case had been transferred to the gender section of the command for further investigation.

He said, “The command is investigating a case of defilement reported against 73-year-old Fola Olowoigbo. The suspect was alleged to have defiled a 14-year-old female child till she became pregnant.

“The suspect, who hailed from Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, is a taxi driver and next-door neighbour of the child’s mother. It was said the suspect was always sending the teenager on errands unknown to the mother that he had ulterior motives.”

Meanwhile, one Elizabeth Ibezim, is cooling her heels in police custody after she was allegedly caught with a two-year-old girl.

Our correspondent gathered that the woman allegedly abducted the child on Tuesday while her mother was immersed in selling her wares at the Yam Market in Mile 12, Ketu, Lagos.

The mother, on noticing that her daughter was missing, raised the alarm and people joined her to search for the little girl.

The abductor was about boarding a bus with the child at Ketu bus stop when she was reportedly intercepted by a mob that almost lynched her.

The PPRO, who confirmed the incident, said policemen rescued the woman and took her to the station.

He said, “The suspect, one Elizabeth Ibezim, allegedly took the child away without the consent of her mother. Luck, however, ran out on the suspect when she was spotted with the child by her mother, who was in a near state of hysteria.

“As the suspect was about to board a commercial vehicle at the bus stop, the desperate mum rushed to where the suspect was and struggled to collect the girl from the suspect, raising the alarm, which attracted a mob that nearly lynched the woman, but for the quick intervention of a police team stationed near the market place.

“The case is currently under investigation at the gender section of the Lagos State Police Command.”

Oti added that the Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, had urged parents to be wary of their children’s movements to prevent incidence of abduction and rape.
