A 38-year-old furniture maker, Mohammed Ibrahim, who allegedly defrauded his customer of N100, 000, on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
The accused was, however, granted bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum after he pleaded not guilty.
Ibrahim, who resides at No. 14, Akiode St., Olawumi Oke-Ira, Ogba, Lagos, is being tried for stealing and obtaining money under false pretences.
The accused, according to Police Prosecutor Abiola Olawale, committed the offences on Jan. 26 at No. 4, Oyinola
St., Oke-Ira, Ogba in Ikeja area.
Olawale said Mr Olarenwaju Adams, the complainant, gave the furniture maker N100,000 to construct a set of chairs for him.
“Ibrahim failed to produce the chairs as agreed; instead, he converted the money to personal use.”
The offences breached Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates three years jail term for stealing, while Section 314 prescribes 15 years for obtaining money by false pretences.
The Magistrate, Mr W.A. Salami, in his ruling, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
The sureties should show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government as part of the bail condition, she said.
