Police arraign 24-year-old for murder in Benin


The police have arraigned a 24-year-old man before an Egor Magistrates Court sitting in Benin, Edo State for the alleged murder of one Endurance Guobadia.

The accused, Chuks Michael, was arraigned on three-counts of murder and break in on Friday.

The investigating police officer, Mr. Igbinigie Osarubie, said the offence was committed on October 21, 2015.

He stated that Michael and others, now at large, broke into the residence of one Kenneth Guobadia at about 12.30am.

He said that the accused person hit the victim with a pestle, which led to her death.

The charge read, “That you Chuks Michael, male, and others now at large on the same date, time and place, in the aforementioned magisterial district did murder one Endurance Divine Guobadia (female) by hitting her with a pestle on her head which caused her death and, thereby, committed an offence punishable under Section 391(1) of the Criminal Code, Cap 48, Volume II, Laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria, 1976, as applicable in Edo State.

“That you Chuks Michael, male, and others now at large on the same date, time and place, in the aforementioned magisterial district did break and enter the house of one Kenneth Guobadia (male) and, thereby, committed an offence punishable under Section 411 of the Criminal Code, Cap 48, Volume II, Laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria, 1976, as applicable in Edo State.”

The suspect pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him. But the presiding magistrate, Dr. A. A. Ihenyen, said the court lacked the jurisdiction to hear the matter.

Iheyen directed the accused person to seek bail in a court of competent jurisdiction and ordered his remand in prison custody.

Meanwhile, an Oredo Magistrates’ Court in Benin has ordered the remand of two suspects, Orobosa Peter and Eguakun Agbonlahor, in prison custody for allegedly robbing one Vivian Oji.

The prosecutor, Mr. Sylvester Omor, told the court that the accused, along with others now at large, committed the offence at Mission Road junction in Benin.

Omor alleged that the accused inflicted an injury on the victim’s forehead and forcefully collected the sum of N54, 000 from her.

The victim, Vivian Oji, told the court that the first accused was the person that collected the cash from her.

The plea of the accused person was not taken on the two-count charge of conspiracy and robbery.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened section 403A and 402 of the criminal code cap. 48 Volume ll laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria 1976 as applicable in Edo.

The Magistrate, Mrs. C.O Nwoha, remanded the two accused persons to Benin prison and adjourned the case till January 29 for mention.
