Driver sentenced to 5 days of sweeping police station

An Ogudu Magistrate’s Court in Lagos, ordered a commercial driver, Kolawole Olumide, 25, to sweep the Ogudu Police Station for five days for driving against traffic.

The magistrate, Mrs Sule Amzat, pronounced the sentence after the driver pleaded guilty to the three-count charge of driving without a licence and causing wilful obstruction on the highway.

Amzat ordered Olumide to sweep the police station for a minimum of two hours each day for the five days and to pay N5,000 to Lagos State Government for each count.

The magistrate said if the driver failed to comply with the community service imposed, he would be taken into custody for at least six months.

She also ordered that the vehicle, a Volkswagen LT bus with number plates KRD 833 XH, should be released to the convict upon completion of his sentence.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Sergeant Lucky Ihiehie, had told the court that Olumide drove against traffic on the highway.

He said the driver also caused wilful obstruction on the road, having no regard for other road users and that the offences committed contravened Schedule 3, items 1, 24 and Schedule 1, item 45 of the Lagos State Traffic Law, 2012.
