The Oyo State Police Command has apprehended two suspected petroleum pipeline vandals with 100 kegs of the product in Ida village, Ibadan.
The state Commissioner of Police, Leye Oyebade, said the suspects were arrested after an intelligence report from members of the public who suspected the movement of the suspects in the village.
Oyebade said, “The suspects were caught with 100 kegs loaded with fuel. They were arrested in a village close to the site of petroleum pipeline. Our investigation is still on to fish out other members of the syndicate. These are the people that are destroying petroleum pipelines leading to the challenges related to fuel crisis in the country. We will charge them to court immediately. The command has put more of its men in the area where the crime was committed.”
One of the suspects, Abideen Olagunju, said one Sobowale, who is at large, tricked him to commit the crime. He said initially, he was told by Sobowale that he had kegs of groundnut oil which he would like to sell but he would need a bus to transport the kegs from its location in the village.
“I organised a bus to transport the kegs but he did not tell me that they were filled with petrol. When we got to the village, he took the bus from us and went deeper inside the village. He returned with the kegs filled. It was when he returned that I realised that it was petrol. On our way, we were stopped by a police patrol and arrested around 5.30 am on Thursday.”
