Fuel-laden bus explodes, kills three

Luck ran out on four suspected marketers of stolen fuel on Tuesday after a civilian bus with number plate, KTU 418 XK, loaded with petrol went up in flames.

The four suspects were said to have siphoned the fuel from the pipelines of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation on Lagos waterways and were engulfed in the inferno, which killed three of them.

The last victim sustained severe burns.

The victims, whose name had yet to be ascertained, were returning from where they had stolen the fuel around 5am when the vehicle crashed into a pole at Aswani in the Isolo area of the state and caught fire.

The men of the Lagos State Fire Service from Isolo and Ilupeju stations were said to have arrived at the scene to put out the fire.

An eyewitness, Kola Isiaq, said, “The bus crashed into a pole and exploded. We discovered that it was loaded with petrol in jerrycans.”

The state fire service director, Mr. Rasaq Fadipe, said the three corpses had been deposited in a morgue.

The General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Mr. Michael Akindele, said proper investigation would be conducted into the incident.
