Police arraign man for raping neigbour’s daughter

The police in Lagos State have arrested a 30-year-old man, David Daniel, for allegedly raping his co-tenant’s daughter, Kafayat (pseudonym), in his room.

It was learnt that the suspect and the nine-year-old victim lived on Ogunjimi Street, Moricas, Agege.

It was gathered that her mother had noticed that the minor’s private parts were swollen but thought she had an infection.

She was said to have warned her not to play at secluded places in the compound.

While Kafayat and her friends were playing outside around 7pm last Wednesday, Daniel lured her into his room again, where he reportedly raped her.

A three-year-old girl allegedly saw him luring Kafayat into his room and went to report to her mother, who in turn informed the victim’s parents.

Daniel was said to have pushed Kafayat out of his room when he noticed that her mother was approaching his apartment.

Our correspondent learnt sperm was found in her private parts while her pants were wet.

The girl was taken to the Mirabel Centre for tests, where it was revealed that she had been defiled.

The mother thereafter reported the matter at the police station and David was arrested.

He was subsequently arraigned by a police prosecutor, Inspector Benedict Aigbokhan, on one count of rape on Friday before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court sitting in Ogba.

The charge read, “That you, David Daniel, on March 9, 2016, at about 6.50pm on Ogunjimi Street, Moricas, Agege, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did defile a girl (name witheld), aged nine, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.”

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The presiding magistrate, Mr. T.A. Elias, ordered that he should be remanded in prison custody and adjourned the case till March 16, 2016.
