A 40-year-old travel agent, Frederick Owolere, was on Friday brought before a Yaba Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos for alleged forgery and obtaining under false pretences.
The accused, who resides in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State, was arraigned on three counts of forgery, obtaining by false pretences and unlawful possession.
The prosecutor, Inspector Roman Unuigbe, told the court that the accused committed the offences on August 30, 2015, on Ikorodu Road, Lagos.
Unuigbe said the accused paraded himself as Chief Executive Officer and President of Insist Travels and Tours Limited with the intention to defraud one Nike Idowu.
He said the accused, who was in possession of a forged identity card, defrauded Idowu of the sum of N1.1m.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened sections 312, 315 and 361 (1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 312 prescribes seven years’ imprisonment for anyone found guilty of obtaining by false pretences.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr. P.A. Ojo, released the accused on N500,000 bail, with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till June 1, 2016, for substantive trial.
