A 53-year-old ex-convict, Peter Raymond, has been arrested by the police for allegedly stealing fabric at a shop in a plaza on Martins Street, Lagos Island.
It was learnt that the suspect, who had just completed four years’ jail term in Cotonou, Benin Republic, had accompanied an in-law who wanted to buy some cloth at the shop.
While the in-law was negotiating with the owner of the shop, Serah Oyebunle, he reportedly removed some cloth from the hanger and hid it under his dress.
It was gathered that Raymond left the shop immediately, unaware that Oyebunle had been monitoring his movement around the shop.
He was apprehended as he left the shop and cloth valued at N100,000 was recovered from him.
He was handed over to the cops at the Kester Police Post.
The Ogoja, Cross River State indigene was said to have confessed to the crime in his statement to the police, saying he and an accomplice, who was at large, had earlier gone to steal in the shop.
The suspect was subsequently arraigned before a Tinubu Magistrate’s Court on two counts of stealing by a police prosecutor, Inspector Philip Osijale.
The charges read in part, “That you, Peter Raymond, of Fadare Street, Mile 12, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, on May 23, 2016, at about 9.30am, did steal fabric valued at N100,000, property of one Serah Oyebunle of Martins Street, Lagos Island, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.”
The accused pleaded not guilty and was admitted to bail by the presiding magistrate, Mr. A. Adefulire, in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.
The case was adjourned till July 13, 2016.
