A’Ibom to prosecute teachers for sexual abuse

The Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, has said his administration would prosecute teachers who sexually abuse pupils, especially the girl child, in accordance with the law of the land.

The governor stated this on Friday during the 2016 Children Day celebration in Uyo, with the theme, “Protect the Rights of a Child in the Face of Violence and Insecurity: End Child Marriage.”

He added that government would not tolerate sexual child abuse of pupils by those paid to impart lasting knowledge and morals to them.

“I sound a note of warning against to the teachers who abuse female pupils. Please be guided.

“Any day I get any report of an abuse of any child, especially a female child, in any school, that teacher will be prosecuted. The teacher will never escape the hammer of the law,” Emmanuel said.

He urged the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Dr. Glory Edet, to make her phone numbers available to the children so they could reach her when the need arises.

According to him, government will send an amendment to the law on rape in the state to the state House of Assembly so as to make it stiffer for offenders.

He said, “We are going to send some amendments to law on rape in the state to the state House of Assembly to protect the girl child and make it tough for offenders.’’

The governor also called for the establishment of Chaplaincy in schools, especially boarding schools to check moral decadence among pupils.
