A victim of police brutality, Mr. Adebayo Olaide, has cried out to the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase; and the Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Abubakar Malami, to assist him get police pay him N20m court judgement award.
He stated that the money was awarded in his favour in January 2013 by the Oyo State High Court against the Nigeria Police Force and was upheld by the Court of Appeal, Ibadan Division on April 15, 2014.
The victim, who is now visually impaired, said he had only gotten N313,000 of the N20m from some banks from their police deposits, when his lawyer sued some banks to enforce the judgement.
Olaide was a 300 level student of Economics and Mathematics of the College of Education, Ilaro, Osun State; when the attack took place.
During a media briefing in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital on Friday, he said he was brutalised by the police on June 25, 2009 which led to his current visual impairment.
According to him, the incident occurred along Oyo Road, Alagbayun village near Odo Oba, close to Ogo Oluwa Local Government Area of Oyo State.
He stated that he spent 18 months in hospitals, including the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, because of the eye problem caused by the police brutality.
A medical report by the Head of Department, Ophthalmology, UITH, Dr. F.O. Olatunji, on November 16, 2011, stated that Olaide was examined and found to have lost vision permanently in the left eye and vision in the right eye was severely impaired (6/36) due to the injuries he sustained.
The victim lamented that life had become increasing difficult and unbearable for him and his family since then, adding that he had turned to begging to raise money for his family’s upkeep.
According to him, his two children; Jethro (6), and Praise (3), have dropped out of school because of his inability to pay their school fees.
He added that he was faced with ejection because of two years unpaid rent.
“The AGF and IGP should please kindly help me and pay the money quickly because I have suffered. Only my wife’s family, my pastor, and my friends have been helping me.”
Olaide’s wife, Ayodele lamented the increasingly unbearable hardship on the family.
