Mob beats rider to death for stealing goat

A 24-year-old man, identified as Ilemobayo Anjorin, was beaten to death by a mob in the Palmgroove area of Ondo State for allegedly stealing a goat on Saturday.

The deceased was said to be a chieftain of one of the branches of the Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Riders Association of Nigeria in the town.

According to an eyewitness, the deceased and his friend were apprehended for the offence, but while his friend escaped, Anjorin was reportedly apprehended and brutalised by a mob on the street who were allegedly mostly students of the Adeyemi College of Education, before he was rescued by the policemen who took him to a hospital in the town.

The eyewitness said the mob followed the policemen to the hospital where the doctor confirmed that the alleged thief had given up the ghost.

The Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Enuowa Police Station, Ondo, Mr. Kunle Omisakin, said the woman who was the owner of the alleged stolen goat had been arrested while investigation had commenced into the matter.

He added that information concerning the incident had been forwarded to the appropriate quarters at the police command headquarters in Akure.

A human rights activist, Muyideen Olamoyegun, urged the people to avoid taking laws into their own hands, but rather report such cases to the appropriate authorities.

The activist stated that all issues relating to criminal activities should be reported to the police and other security agencies, rather than for the people to engage themselves in extra-judicial killings.
