It was gathered that Okpata committed the crime at a building site, where he was employed as a bricklayer.
The generator reportedly provided electricity at the building site.
The bricklayer allegedly sneaked into the building site around 1:00 am on July 13 and made away with the generator. But he was apprehended by a police patrol team trying to conceal the generator around 2.00 am at IBB Flyover, along Enugu-Abakiliki road.
It was learnt that Okpata intended to keep the generator at the location until a buyer turned up.
The police team from the New Haven Division promptly arrested the bricklayer when he failed to explain how he came about the generator.
The spokesman, Enugu State Police Command, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the development, said the suspect had owned up to the crime.
Amaraizu added that the bricklayer expressed regret over his action.
The state police spokesman, said, “The suspect said if he had known that he would not succeed, he would not have ventured into the act. The suspect blamed the crime on Satan. The bricklayer is to be charged to court very soon.”
