Motorcycle rider, female passenger killed in Ogun crash

A commercial motorcyclist and his female passenger have been killed in a crash at the Sango end of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

It was learnt that the accident involved the motorcycle, a tricycle and a commercial bus.

While the motorcyclist and the tricycle rider were heading for Sango, the commercial bus was said to be going to the Ijoko area of the state.

The three were said to have had a head-on collision after the motorcycle rider tried to overtake the tricycle rider.

Our correspondent was told that the tricycle rider, who was seriously injured, had been rushed to a hospital in the state.

A witness, Segun Onifade, explained that the accident was caused by the okada rider, who was trying to overtake the tricycle rider.

He said, “The accident was avoidable. The okada rider and the tricycle rider were heading towards Sango, while the bus driver was going to Ijoko.

“Just close to the Sango Under Bridge area, the okada rider dangerously overtook the tricycle rider. The bus driver, who was trying to manoeuvre, suddenly rammed into them. The three collided, resulting in the instant dead of the okada rider and his female passenger.”

The witness said a relative of the woman later visited the scene, adding that the corpses were deposited at the Ota General Hospital morgue.

He explained that the Sango Police Division took the injured victims to the hospital.

It was gathered that the family of the deceased woman had, however, contacted the police in order to be issued a clearance paper to enable them to take the corpse for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

“She will be buried tomorrow (Friday) and the family has been making efforts to get the corpse released,” a source said.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Police Command, Muyiwa Adejobi, said only one person was killed.

He said, “What I have is still very sketchy. But for now, I can confirm one death in that crash. The Sango Divisional Police Officer promised to furnish me with more details, but I am still awaiting his response.”
