Flood kills 60-year-old woman in Zamfara


A 60-year-old woman has been killed and over 100 houses destroyed by flood in Gummi Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

The council’s Vice Chairman, Alhaji Sa’idu Bawa, confirmed the incident to newsmen in Gummi on Thursday, explaining that it occurred because of persistent downpour in the area .

Bawa said household materials, food items and animals were also lost to the disaster.

He said that over 500 people were also rendered homeless and were now living with their family members.

He said, “Apart from the disaster here in Gummi, we received similar report of the flood disaster in Gayari district and are going to visit the area after the assessment.

“We would compile all the list of the victims after which the local government would give its support to the victim.”

He further said that a request for the assistance would also be forwarded to both state and Federal Government on the disaster.

The Councilor representing Rafi ward in Gummi district, Malam Sani Usamatu, described the incident as unfortunate .

Usamatu said that the areas mostly affected by the flood in Gummi town were Albarkawa, Yardiga, Yartsayasu and Lemawa area.

He noted that most of the victims of the disasters were women and children.

Malam Bala Muhammad, one of the victims, who spoken on be half of the entire victims of the disaster, appealed to the government at all level to provide emergency assistance for them.

Gummi is one of the eight local government areas of the state predicted to witness flooding by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency
