An Oredo Magistrates’ Court in Benin, Edo State, has sentenced one Patience Reveth to one year imprisonment for flogging her neighbour.
The trial magistrate, Mrs. RacheaI Ogbevoen, convicted Reveth, after finding her guilty of the charge filed against her.
Ogbevoen, however, sentenced the 38-year-old woman with an option fine of N25,000.
The police prosecutor, Patrick Agbonifo, had told the court that the offence was committed in November, 2014, on First East Circular road in Benin.
Agbonifo had explained that the convict assaulted the victim identified as Mrs. Helen Tunde of the same address by beating her with a cane and pouring pepper on her, an act which caused her bruises on her hand and neck.
The prosecutor had also added that the offence contravened Section 355 of the Criminal Code Cap 48 Vol. II, Laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria, 1976, as applicable in Edo State.
Meanwhile, the police have arraigned one Malju Idubor, 56, and his wife, Clementine, 41, before an Egor Magistrates’ Court in Benin for unlawfully assaulting one Alhaji Hassan Usman.
The police prosecutor, Mr. Chucks Nnamdi, alleged that Clementina had on August 24, assaulted Usman by spitting on him on Utagban Street, Ugbighoko.
Nnamdi alleged that she maliciously tore the victim’s shirt valued at N8,500.
He also added that the two counts on which she was arraigned contravened Sections 351 and 451 of the Criminal Code.
According to the prosecutor, her husband had allegedly slapped Usman at Evbuotubu police station and conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace.
Nnamdi explained that the couple’s offences contravened Sections 249 (d) and 355 of the Criminal Code.
However, the Chief Magistrate, Mr. Williams Aziegbemhim, granted them bail with a surety each, who are resident in Benin, and N50,000 in like sum.
Aziegbemhim later adjourned the case till November 7, 2016.
