The Oyo State Police Command on Tuesday said it has arrested 30 pupils for their alleged involvement in the destruction of classrooms of public schools during a protest against the state government’s decision to stop automatic promotion in secondary schools.
Some pupils in five public secondary schools in Oyo town and Ibadan went on the rampage last week over the decision of the state government, leading to indefinite closure of Community Secondary School, Iyana Idi-Ose; Ojoo High School, Ojoo, Ibadan; Isale Oyo Community High School, Oyo; Anglican-Methodist Secondary School, Oyo; and Oba Adeyemi High School, Oyo.
The Public Relations Officer of the state police command, Adekunle Ajisebutu, told our correspondent that 25 of the erring pupils were arrested in Oyo, while five others were picked up in Ibadan.
He said, “The police have arrested 30 pupils for their involvement in the protest and destruction of public property.
“Those arrested in Ibadan have been charged to court, while their counterparts from Oyo will be in court before Thursday.”
The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof Adeniyi Olowofela, advised pupils against acts capable of disturbing the peace of the state.
He added that the decision to cancel automatic promotion was taken to address falling standard of education in the state.
The commissioner said the government would not reverse the decision.
