Two brothers, Elijah Okpara and Prince Okpara, have been arrested by men of the Ondo State Command for allegedly taking part in some of the robbery incidents that occurred in Akure in recent times.
The suspects were specifically arrested at Abusoro in Ijoka area of Akure, the capital of Ondo State .
One of the suspects, Elijah said he and his brother went into burglary and robbery when they lost their jobs due to the economic hardship in the country.
But he said he and his brother had not killed any of their victims since they started the ‘business’, saying they only broke shops and stole goods .
Parading the suspects , the Ondo State Police Commissioner, Mrs. Hilda Harrison, said the suspects were in possession of a locally-made single-barrel gun with which they used to carry out operations with members of their gang.
She said, “While our anti-robbery team was on patrol of Abusoro community, some boys whose movement were suspicious within the community were arrested with combined efforts of policemen and youths of the area .
“ Elijah Okpara was arrested with a black bag containing single-barrel locally-made gun while the other two boys escaped but preliminary investigation is on with a view to arresting the remaining suspects.”
It was gathered that after Elijah had been arrested, his brother, Prince too was later arrested by the police in Elijah’s house .
Elijah , a 20-year-old suspect, said he was introduced into the business by one of his friends, called Kenny (also known as Big Show) when life was getting difficult for him.
He said, “ I told him that I have no work again and to feed was difficult and he told me I could join him in his business. That was how I started following him. I also introduced my brother to it. We only break shops and steal but we don’t kill and I have never killed in my life .”
On the arms allegedly found in his possession, Okpara said the gun was owned by Kenny who had run away .
