Court admits two robbery suspects to N2m bail

Justice Abubakar Talba of a Federal Capital Territory High Court, Gudu, on Thursday admitted Sani Magaji and Mohammed Aliyu, charged with possession of firearms and robbery, to N1m bail each.

Ruling on their bail application, Talba ordered that the defendants must produce two sureties each in like sum.

He said the sureties must be reasonable and responsible citizens who reside in the FCT.

He also directed the Divisional Police Officer to verify the addresses of the sureties and confirm from neighbours whether or not “they are persons of good character.”

The judge said the defendants were admitted to bail because the prosecution did not oppose the motion for their bail filed by their counsel, Mr. Christian Achebe, on November 15, 2016.

The defendants, Magaji, 27, and Aliyu, 25, had at their arraignment on June 20, pleaded not guilty to three counts of criminal conspiracy, unlawful possession of firearms and robbery.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the prosecutor, Mr. Malik Taiwo, had told the court that the police had raided a hideout of robbers in Karamajiji, Lugbe, on May 1, 2016, and arrested the hoodlums who usually dispersed from the hideout to rob people.

“The two defendants were arrested during the raid.

“A pistol with two live cartridges was recovered from Sani Magaji,” Taiwo said.
