Woman arraigned for using children as beggars

 

 For allegedly using her children as beggars, Ayo Okegbero, 36, on Wednesday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrate’s Court.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Okegbero, an unemployed woman, who resides in Ojota, Lagos, is being tried for breach of the peace.

The prosecutor, Inspector Simeon Inuoha, told the court that the offence was committed on November 22, at Maryland, Lagos.

Inuoha said the accused forced two of her children to beg for alms on the streets.


“The children were apprehended by the police on patrol, and they confessed that it was their mother that told them to beg for alms,” he said.

Inuoha also said the children did not go to school, adding that they were eight and 10 years old respectively.

He said the offence contravened Section 166 (d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. B. O. Osunsanmi, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N50,000, with two sureties in like sum.

The case was adjourned till February 20, 2017.
