The Zonal Intervention Squad of the Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos, has arrested four robbery suspects in Ogunmakin, in the Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The suspects–Biodun Rabiu, Dauda Ayoade, Olaoye Popoola and Segun Fariyike–were arrested after detectives received information that Rabiu was being treated for a gunshot injury in the house of a local bone setter.
A police source said operatives swooped on the house and arrested the suspect, who confessed to have participated in a robbery.
He said, “We got information that Rabiu was receiving treatment for a gunshot injury in the house of a local bone setter.
“He and his gang members had operated in the Abule Ilumeji community late June, during which they shot at one of their victims.
“They were escaping from the scene when they met some vigilantes who opened fire on them and Rabiu was hit.
“His gang members took him to the house of the bone setter. Upon his arrest, he confessed to the crime and said five of them conducted the operation. He said he was just released from prison.”
PUNCH Metro gathered that the suspect, in his statement, claimed to have been released from prison sometime in 2016, after which he met one of the gang members, Fariyike, in a club where they struck a relationship.
The duo were said to have started by robbing a commercial motorcycle rider and dispossessing him of his motorcycle with a gun provided by one Eni, a fleeing member of the gang.
The other members of the gang were said to have been recruited as the group became more daring and organised four successful robberies together.
However, the gang met their Waterloo at Abule Ilumeji, where they were resisted by the local security men.
The police said Fariyike, among other confessions, said he was a member of a cult, adding that some of the group members were recruited from the cult.
The Zone 2 Police Public Relations Officer, Dolapo Badmos, while confirming the incident said the suspects were arrested with a cut-to-size locally-made pistol.
“The Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Adamu Ibrahim, has directed that the suspects be charged to court at the end of investigation, while effort is on to arrest the fleeing member of the gang,” she added.
