Hoodlums invade hostel, rob, rape varsity students in Rivers - Shepherd Digest Magazine

Some yet to be identified gunmen at the weekend invaded an off-campus hostel at Ignatius Ajuru University, in Rumuolumeni, Obio/Akpor Local Council of Rivers State, robbing and raping students and residents in the area.

Some residents who suffered attack during raid regretted that the affected hostel is located close to the Rumuolumeni Police Divisional headquarters, yet no help was received from the security personnel.

They further lamented that the area has been subjected to series of attacks by hoodlums for several months with nothing being done to arrest the ugly development.

Speaking on the incident, a resident of the area who pleaded anonymity, disclosed that the hoodlums were aware of the poor security system in the area, which according to him, spur their steady attack.

He said: “We are being attacked by hoodlums on a weekly basis, and this is because of the poor security in the area, which is aiding the recurrent attacks by the bandits.”

It was gathered that some of the victims have already been hospitalized, while others who sustained minor injuries during the incident have returned to their rooms yesterday from hiding.

A student, Bright John, complained that the regular attacks on the students’ apartment were affecting their academic study. He stressed that each time the robbers invade their apartment, they rob students of their laptops and phones, which contain academic materials.

“We are being robbed and our girls raped by criminals every time. We are living in fear, because these boys come here every time and attack us. They rob us every time at gunpoint. The whole incident affects our studies. So, we are calling on the police to be proactive in providing security to us.”

Also confirming the incident, one of the landlords, Mr. Kinikanwo Amadi, accused the security operatives of inaction.
