A man, Benedict Ekeoch, has been arraigned before an Ebute-Meta Magistrate’s Court on two counts of stealing and arson.
He was alleged to have stolen filters valued at N8m and set fire to a shop.
The charges read, “That you, Benedict Ekeocha, on December 21, 2017, around 5.50pm, at Trade Fair Complex, Ojo, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did steal Oil and Gas Filters, valued at N8,177,189, property of one Jenkins Uwagbai.
“That you, Benedict Ekeocha, did wilfully and unlawfully set fire to a shop belonging to one Jenkins Uwagbai.”
The police prosecutor, W/Inspector Onishakin Kehinde, said the offences were punishable under sections 287 and 341 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2015
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges and elected summary trial.
The defence counsel, Spurgeon Ataene, asked for their bail in liberal terms.
The police prosecutor announced the presence of the complainant, Jenkins Uwagbai, and the Investigating Police Officer, Inspector John Babalola, as witnesses.
The magistrate, A.O. Komolafe, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N2m with two sureties each in like sum.
