Two siblings were on Thursday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court for allegedly beating up a couple over unpaid rent.

The duo – Isiaka Olaleye, a 43- year-old businessman; and Olaide Olaleye, a 35-year-old fashion designer – were arraigned before Magistrate F.F. George on three counts bordering on breach of peace, conspiracy and assault, which they pleaded not guilty to.

According to the police prosecutor, Godwin Awase, the defendants committed the offences on May 6 in the Onipanu area of Lagos State.

He said the siblings and others, who were still at large, conspired to assault the couple, Mr. Sheu Adeniran and Mrs. Asiatu Adeniran, by beating them up for owing rent.

Awase explained that the duo unlawfully entered the couple’s apartment and threw out their property.

“The accused, who are landlord’s children, conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by hiring thugs to beat up the complainants.

“The accused were parking out the complainants’ property from the apartment and the complainants tried to stop them, which resulted in their being beaten.

“The complainants reported the case at a police station and the accused were arrested, while others escaped,” he said.

He said the offences contravened sections 168, 171 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The magistrate granted the defendants bail in the sum of N50,000 each with one surety each in like sum.

He said the sureties should be gainfully employed with an evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The case was adjourned till May 23 for mention.
