Police detectives attached to the Delta State Police Command, Asaba on Wednesday arrested the General Overseer “Gospel Christ Mission in OKpanam Community, near Azube for allegedly raping a seven-year-old daughter of his member.
The Police Commissioner in the state, Mr. Mahammad Mustafa who confirmed the arrest of the pastor identified as Alfred Omereh to DAILY POST, said, “The suspect’s church is in Okpanam Community; the victim was lured into the church office on Tuesday with the intention of praying for her, and he (pastor) had carnal knowledge of her.”
He disclosed that the suspect upon interrogation confessed to the crime.
It was gathered that the victim could not keep the incident to herself, hence she opened up to her parents.
Her father, Robert Kelechi told DAILY POST, “I discussed with my pastor that my daughter Jane always shouts at night.
“He said I should bring her to the church for prayers, I dropped her in church and I went to work on that fateful day, only for me to return and see my daughter was crying.
“I insisted to know why she was crying; she told me, so, I went and reported to the police.”
Mr. Kelechi explained that his daughter was later taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Asaba where it was confirmed that she was raped.
Speaking further, the police boss said the matter was reported at the police headquarters where detectives were assigned to investigate the matter, adding that upon investigation, the suspect was arrested.
Meanwhile, the police in Oghara community have killed a kidnap suspect during a gun battle on Monday in the area.
Mahammad Mustafa, the State Police Commissioner, who confirmed this to DAILY POST said, “the hoodlums had invaded the house of one Engineer Joseph Otemewho, along Ogini road, Oghara, and kidnapped his wife, took her away to unknown destination in her Lexus SUV with Registration Number GRA-911 KH.
“The police with the assistance of Local Vigilante went on their trail and in the process, engaged the hoodlums in gun battle where one of the hoodlums was killed.”
He said that other members of the kidnapping gang fled into the bush with gun injuries, and the car was recovered, and the housewife rescued unhurt.
