A team of police operatives in Aba, the commercial hub of Abia State, has arrested three female suspects for an alleged child trafficking offence.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Anthony Ogbizi, who disclosed the arrest of the suspects on Friday, said two of the suspects identified as Catherine Charles and George Nwaiwu, conspired and sold a new born baby boy delivered by the third suspect, Gift Daniel, to one Mrs. Maria, now at large.

He said the suspects were arrested by police operatives at Osisioma Aba after a tip off, while efforts are being made to arrest Mrs. Maria and possibly recover the baby.

He added that the suspects would be charged to court after police investigation on the matter.

Confessing to the crime, Nwaiwu who claimed to be a trader in Aba, said Gift came to her to help sell her baby.

She said Gift told her that her mother had sold her first baby, adding that she wanted to sell the second baby to raise money to help herself.

She said, “The girl was stranded and she came to me to help her. When I asked her of her parents, she said they drove her away.

“I asked her what she wanted from me, she said I should help her sell her baby after delivery and give her the money to help herself.

“I sold the baby for N650, 000 and after settling the hospital bills, because she delivered through Caesarean session, I gave her the sum of N90, 000.”

Gift, who also confessed to the crime, said she sold her baby because her mother had earlier sold her first baby.

The 17 year-old, who claimed to be learning how to operate lotto machine, said she wanted to use the money to start her own business.
