An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court has sentenced two brothers, Moses Sunday and Godwin Sunday, to one month of community service for unlawful possession of a toy gun.
The News agency of Nigeria reports that the Chief Magistrate, Olufunke Sule-Amzat, sentenced the siblings after they pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy and unlawful possession of a toy gun.
The duo had urged the court to temper justice with mercy, saying their act was out of ignorance and poverty.
The chief magistrate ordered that the convicts should spend two hours every day for the next one month carrying out the community service.
Sule-Amzat said, “The sentence will serve as a deterrent to others.”
The police prosecutor, Benson Emuerhi, had earlier told the court that the accused were found with the toy gun on June 27 around 11.30pm in the Mushin area of Lagos.
He said, “They were apprehended by the policemen from the Alakara division during a stop-and-search operation.
“They could not give a satisfactory explanation on the ownership of the toy gun and other weapons in their possession. The weapons are used to cause fear.”
He said the offences contravened sections 330 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
