The Navy on Wednesday arrested three more persons suspected to be pipeline vandals in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State.
The naval operatives, it was learnt, had earlier on Tuesday arrested four persons at Tebijoh community in the council.
Findings on Wednesday evening, however, revealed that the security operatives had released some of the suspects leaving two of them in their custody.
It was not clear if their arrest was in connection with the recent activities of the new militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers.
Confirming Wednesday’s arrest, the Chairman, Kokodiagbene community, Mr. Sheriff Mulade, said, “JTF came about 6:30am on Wednesday and arrested three persons. Out of the three suspects, one of them is a student while one is a passenger who was in Tebijoh to board a boat to Warri. They left those two. They (JTF) took two 200 horsepower speed boats.”
But a senior military source told our correspondent that the security operatives acted on intelligence reports that some militants had fled to the community after the invasion of Oporoza, the headquarters of Gbaramatu Kingdom.
When contacted, the Commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship, Riami Mohammed, a commodore, confirmed the arrest of some persons to our correspondent.
Mohammed said, “We are after those vandalising our pipelines. After our last press conference, we have made more arrest.”
But, a resident of the community, Alaowei Cleric, told journalists that the suspects were fishermen.
He added that Tebijoh was one of the villages in the troubled Gbaramatu Kingdom.
